Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency was founded by Sarkeesian. The site hosts videos with commentary that analyze gender representations in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has won awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are depicted in popular culture. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her work. However, Sarkeesian also highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women as well as other communities who have been excluded. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. Apart from being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university, Sarkeesian became fascinated by the issue of gender and rights for women in the early stages. She had a plan to start an internet-based series on the gender roles in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. This attack didn't stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as a feminist critic of media.
